Abbas Grocery

located at 344 Bell Street South in Ottawa’s Glebe Annex neighborhood, is more than just a convenience store; it’s a cornerstone of community life. Established in 1963 by the Abbas family, the store has been operated by brothers Mike and Radi Abbas, who have been integral to its operation since their teenage years.

Over the decades, Abbas Grocery has evolved to meet the changing needs of its patrons. While it continues to offer staples like fresh produce, soups, and sandwiches, its role extends far beyond retail. The store has become a gathering place where neighbors connect, share news, and support one another.

The Abbas family’s commitment to the community is evident in their actions. They have been known to deliver groceries to those with mobility challenges, assist vulnerable individuals, and even advocate for community improvements, such as the creation of the neighborhood’s only park in the early 1990s.

Their dedication has not gone unnoticed. Long-time customers and community members often share stories of the family’s kindness and support, highlighting the store’s role as a lifeline for many. For instance, when a customer showed signs of early dementia, the Abbas family took steps to ensure she received the care she needed.

In recognition of its significance, Abbas Grocery has been featured in local art, such as a limited-edition print by Ottawa artist Colin White, capturing its iconic presence in the neighborhood. See at ColinWhite.ca

Today, Abbas Grocery stands as a testament to the enduring power of community, embodying the spirit of neighborly care and connection that defines the Glebe Annex.

A review of Abbas

” Abbas Grocery is a great little convenience store for those in the neighbourhood. I was greeted by one of the Abbas brothers (Radi) and he was very friendly and welcoming. The store is clean and has a good selection of products.
I have an unusual fascination with small independently-owned convenience stores, so I like checking them out. I especially like finding some prepared foods in these types of stores, as they are usually made with love. I had heard that Abbas Grocery had good sandwiches so I was excited to check them out. I was expecting paninis but the sandwiches are in fact sandwich bread sandwiches (like Wonder Bread) in comfort food varieties such as tuna, egg salad and ham and cheese. Radi assured me the sandwiches are freshly made each morning. The ham and cheese sandwich was around $4.49 and it did have a generous amount of ham.
I didn’t end up getting anything, but enjoyed looking around. I can tell that the owners take pride in their store.
Prices are reasonable and Radi was very nice. If I lived in the neighbourhood and needed convenience store items, I would definitely go to Abbas Grocery. ”
